Deer are on the move

Starts Thursdaybusiest in November

Deer are turning up on roadsides and in ditches more than at any other time of year. It is the rut: bucks are covering a lot of ground after does, at all hours, and paying very little attention to anything else. November is the worst month of the year for collisions between vehicles and deer, and the clocks make it worse. When they go back an hour at the start of the month, the drive home moves into the dark overnight, in the same weeks the deer are moving most. A deer on the road is rarely alone, so when one crosses in front of you, watch for the next one behind it.

Dusk through late evening, and again around dawn
Any road that runs beside fields, coulees or a river valley, in town as well as out of it
Sunset is at about ten to seven this week and a couple of minutes earlier each day, so the evening drive is already running into dusk. Sunday's snow and the freeze behind it are forecast to leave the roads slick into Monday morning
Slow down from dusk onward, watch both shoulders and the ditches, and use your high beams when nobody is coming. Where one deer crosses, expect a second. On foot, give bucks room and keep dogs leashed
SourcesAMA Insider, "Wildlife Collisions: Safe Driving and Other Steps to Avoid Them", for November as the peak collision month in Alberta, deer as about 80 percent of those collisions, and the driving advice
Wildlife Collision Prevention Program (British Columbia Conservation Foundation), "When Wildlife Vehicle Collisions Occur", for November as a peak deer month and the evening hours.
